Welcome back to school!  The 2017-18 school year is well underway and so far it is a terrific one. We’ve had a wonderful start and everyone is finally used to the early mornings and organized regime of school.  We are looking forward to a great year!

Please join me in partnership as we assist our students, your children, in navigating their school world and taking advantage of all we have to offer.  There are many activities and clubs available for your children and I encourage you to encourage them to participate.  This is my second year as Principal of the elementary school and I am looking forward to continuing to promote a culture of learning and caring at the Conley School.

The week of October 2nd is designated by the state of New Jersey as a Week of Respect.  By working together to foster a culture of respect at Conley School we will do our part to ensure that our students grow both academically and emotionally. Learning how to interact respectfully takes work, and both children and adults make mistakes. Our students are 4-11 years old and are just learning the parameters of social interactions:  the difference between hurtful comments/actions and jokes AND the meaning of and how to show kindness and respect.   As educators and parents, it is our job to be role models for our children; to show empathy and understanding even when mistakes are made.  The more we, as caring adults, can encourage and praise empathy, respect and kindness when we see it, the more it will occur. Let’s continue to work to make the culture and climate of the Conley School one of learning and respect for all of our children.  This year we will continue with the research based character education program called Second Step.  Students in all grades will meet every Monday for ½ hour in groups to complete the grade level lessons concerning empathy, communication, bullying prevention, coping skills, decision making and the like.

Summer was busy at Conley School! The building and grounds look beautiful thanks to our custodians, Kathy Peters, Reinaldo Morales, and Mike Ryan. The gym and cafeteria floors were refinished and the outside circle and parking area beautified.  We also have new modern water fountains in the hallways, which can fill a bottle in addition to providing a drink!  In additon two new faculty members joined the Conley staff.  Please welcome, Martha Deitz and Serena Matarrazzo, and Kevin Vitale is substituting in first grade for Leah Byk, who is out on maternity leave.

Our science program for grades 2-5 continue to be held in the Conley science lab and are taught by one of the grade level teachers.  K, 1st and 5th grade science classes are held in the classroom.  In late October we will begin our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) program for grades 3-5.  The IPads will play an important role in both of these courses.

And handwriting has returned to Conley School.  Every morning for 10-15 minutes your children are practicing handwriting.  Cursive will be taught in 3rd-5th grades later in the year.

Important dates:

  • Halloween will be held on Halloween, Tuesday October 31.
  • Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled for November 7-8. Tuesday and Wednesday only.
  • PTA Welcome Back Picnic:  This Saturday, September 30 from 2:00-5:00

So, here’s to your happy children and the start of a great school year.
